About Justine Elyot

Justine Elyot has always loved to write erotica and erotic romance. Elements you might find in her work include (but are in no way limited to): moustachioed melodrama villains, whips, wisecracks, knights in tarnished armor, damsels under duress, lovers, leather, aquiline features, and references to popular songs. Reviewers have raved, and they have also railed (but, to date, the ravers continue to outnumber the railers).

Nobody was around to see me. I shimmied out of my cover-up, hesitated for a moment, then took off my bikini bottoms. In seconds, I was over the side, a mermaid sluicing through the warm, slightly weedy water. I felt fronds tickle and touch my thighs and I swirled past them, imagining myself on a mission, ducking and curling and flailing through the aqua waters. When my limbs tired, I arranged myself into a starfish float and lay there, lapped and led and tilted by the wavelets, looking at the bleached light on the insides of my eyelids and telling myself that Louis wasn’t worth it … he wasn’t worth it … none of it was worth it …
“Where is your gold?”
The voice was male and spoke in German.
My limbs retracted into cramped flappers and I got a mouthful of sluggish water that almost choked me. I coughed hard, tread water and looked at the source of the question.
I had drifted closer to that crazy gothic boathouse, where a man smiled down at me from the landing stage beside it. He was older but attractive, expensively dressed in pale linen. Shit. The owner of the villa—it had to be. Was I trespassing, swimming here? Could I get into trouble?
Then I thought of what he had said. What the hell was it supposed to mean?
“I’m sorry,” I said, also in German. “Gold?”
“Then you are not a Rhinemaiden?” he said.
Ah. I understood now. A reference to the watery guardians of the Rhinegold, famous in Wagner’s Ring Cycle.
“I don’t think so,” I said. “Just a common or garden naiad.”
He laughed at that.
